After almost two weeks of disruption, STM maintenance workers suspended their strike late Tuesday night. “Syndicat du transport de Montréal – CSN” announced the decision, allowing the transit agency to restart operations.
On Wednesday, November 12, buses start running at 6:15 a.m. and metro service begins at 6:30 a.m. However, service outside peak hours will stay reduced.
On Thursday, November 13, STM plans to restore full regular service across the bus and metro network.
Note: Passenger information tools, such as apps and digital displays, may not immediately show the new schedules during the transition.
Why the Strike Was Halted
Union president Bruno Jeannotte called the suspension a “strategic retreat.” He explained that the decision helps avoid triggering Quebec’s new labour law, Law 14, which could force binding arbitration.
That process would remove the union’s leverage in ongoing negotiations. No final agreement exists yet between STM and the union. Talks will continue in the coming days.
Impacts for Commuters
Transit riders will face limited service during off-peak hours on Wednesday as operations gradually normalize.
STM recommends checking its website or app alerts for real-time updates.
Some tools may still display outdated information. Although the maintenance strike has ended, another strike notice remains active.
The union representing drivers, operators, and station agents plans to strike on November 15 and 16. Commuters should monitor updates and plan accordingly.
What’s Nex
STM and the maintenance workers’ union will keep negotiating toward a long-term deal.
Meanwhile, STM and the union representing drivers and operators are discussing essential-service levels before the upcoming strike dates.
The Tribunal administratif du travail (TAT) will decide what services must continue during that action.
Residents who rely on public transit should prepare backup travel options in case of further interruptions this weekend.
