Recent polling reveals a complex reaction to the new energy agreement between the federal government and Alberta.

What the Poll Says

A new survey shows that after the deal, Carney’s approval rating edged up in Alberta, yet slipped in British Columbia.  Nationally, roughly half of Canadians now approve of the government’s direction on energy.

Many respondents in Alberta praised the deal’s potential to create jobs and boost the economy. Meanwhile, people in B.C. worried about environmental impacts and disruption to coastal ecosystems.

How Political Alignments Shift

The polling suggests a shifting political landscape. In B.C., support for opposition parties rose — especially for the Conservatives and Greens.

In Alberta, Conservative support remains strong, but some Liberal gains emerged after the agreement, reflecting economic optimism among voters there.

Some long-time Liberal supporters expressed concern. They argue that Canada risks weakening climate commitments for short-term gains.

Others counter that the deal balances environmental measures with economic needs through investments in carbon capture and emissions pricing reforms.

Broader Implications

Analysts say the split reaction highlights deep regional divides in Canada. The deal may strengthen economic support in some provinces, but fuel political polarization in others.

The government now faces the challenge of navigating these tensions while pushing energy, climate, and infrastructure policies ahead.

Long-term, the agreement may reshape federal-provincial dynamics, influence future elections, and test Canada’s ability to balance economic growth with environmental goals.
